Race for the Cure
I started my mothers day weekend with a wonderful race for breast cancer. My dear Aunt Penny and her mission companion are both survivors of breast cancer. There are so many others that are not so lucky. This race was such a great experience, it really made me think of what's really important and what really matters. Looking around there were so many people walking for there mothers, sisters, grandmas, or friends some who were still with us and some who were on the other side. Many of these women were walking for themselves lots of them had no hair, some in wheel chairs, but one thing was in common with all of us. We were happy to be alive, sharing this day with people we love. What a great time to reflect on motherhood and a great reminder to enjoy every minute of it. For you never know when it could be taken from you. Happy mothers day, Thanks mom !!
Below is a little background information on the race for the cure I found from this website.
Susan G Komen
"One Promise between two sisters to end breast cancer forever. In 1982 that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Since then, we've transformed the culture - how the world talks about and treats this devastating disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest and most progressive grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists - the only grassroots organization fighting to cure breast cancer at every stage, from the causes to the cures and the pain and anxiety of every moment in between. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world."
Why do we Race?
* Because the greatest risk factors for getting breast cancer are being female and getting older.
* Because breast cancer knows no boundaries..age, gender, socioeconomic status or geographic location.
* Because one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
* Because we are making a difference!! The number of survivors at the race each year are a testament to our success. Together we can realize our promise, to save lives and end breast cancer forever.
